The difference between suspension insulators and pillar insulators

2025-05-22

For high-voltage transmission lines, the key to ensuring their safe, reliable and efficient operation lies in the selection of insulators. So many people will choose suspension insulators and column insulators, and there are also significant differences between suspension insulators and post insulators.

Heavy capacity: Suspended insulators are usually made of porcelain or glass and are designed to be suspended on supporting structures, such as transmission towers. Their load-bearing capacity is affected by the number of insulator units used in series and the design of the suspension system. Suspended insulators can withstand considerable mechanical gravity, and thus are suitable for large-span lines between towers.
Column insulators are vertically installed on the base and are usually used at the end of substations or transmission lines. They can withstand vertical and horizontal loads, providing reliable solutions for high-voltage applications. Although column insulators can also withstand considerable loads, their load-bearing capacity is often limited by the height of the column and the design.

Installation method: The suspension insulator is installed with particular care, after all, the entire string needs to be suspended on the tower. This process usually requires the use of a crane or specialized equipment to ensure that the insulators are firmly connected and correctly aligned.
Column insulators are generally easier to install. They can be directly installed on concrete or steel bases, thereby accelerating the deployment speed. This simple and straightforward installation method is particularly suitable for projects with tight schedules and can be completed very quickly. The installation process usually involves fixing the insulator bolts to the base. However, don't be careless. If the level calibration of the base is not done carelessly, serious problems may occur later.
